What is the French Paradox?

Dr. Press

In addition to the usual recommendation for plenty of exercise, it is critically important for patients to maintain the health of the cardiovascular system. We used to speak of the so-called “French Paradox”, in which the French had the highest saturated fat diets of Western Europe, and at the same time the lowest rate of Cardiovascular disease (heart attacks and strokes). For a long time it was thought by scientists that this was due to the high Alcohol intake, from all the wine consumed in France. That aspect of the paradox was disproved not too long ago. Recently however it was discovered that in all red grapes there is a substance called Resveratrol, which is an anti-oxidant, and is able, because of its small molecular weight, to invade the most minute areas of the cardiovascular tree, and even pass the blood-brain barrier. This substance in recent studies in high doses, has even shown promise in helping certain cases of Diabetes, as it appears to improve insulin function.

Life extension!
It is being studied for an ability to inactivate one of the genes known to be involved in the aging process itself! called the Sirtuin genes, resveratrol appears to inactivate one of these key genes which is the same one inactivated when organisms go on a “calorie restricted diet”. This miserable lifestyle, of constant near-starvation, however has been proven to prolong life, in some animals by nearly 50%. Turning off the Sirtuin genes appears to be exactly the same effect as in calorie restriction, but WITHOUT the misery!

Cancer prevention
Resveratrol also appears to reduce the incidence of colon and breast cancers, and may be involved in staving off the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.

Thus, Dr. Press now recommends that all patients over 35 should be taking at least 40 mgs of Resveratrol twice a day (BID), and diabetics should be thinking about starting a regimen of more like 500-700 mgs/day.

Resveratrol and Diabetes
Recent investigations have shown an amazing ability of high dose Resveratrol to actually reverse diabetes in SOME patients. If you are borderline diabetic, and need to lose weight; then that is certainly your best choice for losing your diabetes and dependence on anti-diabetic drugs. But if losing the weight has not quite helped you, then this COULD be worth a try.
